RE: [Honda-C70] Kickstart won't engage 1981

Mike G : Don`t you mean too much free play if a valve is stuck open & the valve isn`t fallowing the tappet ? No free play would mean tappets were to tight & holding the valve open . He did say the bike started & ran after the plug change so that might point to stuck shifter or clutch . Unless he revved it WAY to high & bent a valve. Baby Huey

Reads like the plug hole is stripped, letting all your compression

out, but it's also possible your clutch is disengaged or a valve is

stuck.

Check the plug to see if it is getting tight in the head threads.

Take the plug out and make sure the engine is turning when you move

the kicker by hand. Look into the plug hole to see if the piston is

moving.

If it isn't, check the gear shift lever to see if it is in the

center. Push down a few times on the front and make sure it returns

to the normal resting position.

If the lever is not at the resting position, the clutch will be

engaged partially. This is a problem because the kick starter turns

the final shaft in the transmission, which turns the clutch, which

turns the crankshaft.

Another reason you might have no resistance is a stuck valve. An open valve

Open both valve adjustment covers and turn the engine over by hand,

watching for free play at the tappets.

No free play? Give the end of the adjuster a light tap with a mallet

and a wood block. This should free up the valve stem in the guide and

let the valve seat again.
