I would check for shorts or bad ground connections. The light is not isolated properly, I think, so when turned on, it is causing the system to do this. Also, check the light switch. My knowledge of CDIs is limited, seems like they either work or not, if the engine runs, then it is probably okay.

Hi there My first post after scouring the fourms for days. Learned a lot, replaced Headlamp and replaced the carburator.
I had a burntout headlamp and at that time I had no issues charging battery. The turn signals, brake lights, horn, and even the electric start worked well. Then I replaced the headlamp and the issues started.
I measured the DC voltage at the battery terminals and it was WAY high..20+VDC up to over 30VDC when i reved the motor.
1. battery no longer charged.
2. rectifier seemed to check ok
3. pulled the CDI unit, visual inspection, replaced.
4. signals and all other lights stopped working.
I could be wrong but I suspect the CDI unit.
QUESTIONS:
1. Does the CDI unit provide a Voltage Limiter function at all?
2. Has anyone else seen issues with a CDI unit?
3. is there a good way to test it (aside from replacing it)
