The bulb is AC driven off the alternator but you can just hook it up to a 12 V battery and test it.
It does not care if it is AC or DC, just 12V

Thanks for all the responses. I found a document on this fourm that shows how test a CDI.
based on this document, I tested all the leads and all measurements were OPEN.
a new CDI unit was only $20 So I am willing to pay that to find out for sure.
I tested the new bulb and that seems to have continuity. im going to wire it to a 12 V DC transformer to verify.
I hope i didnt blow that, it was $40 bucks!!!
