Tim : Try putting a thin strip of paper between the points . Pull on the paper while you turn the motor with the 17m wrench . If the points never let the paper slip you know there is not enough gap . My 81 will kick by the point where it needs to be set because of the magnets on the fly wheel pushing or pulling . You can leave the cover off & test run . Sparks flying every way could mean your points are oily & shorting out. Keep working slow & steady. Good Luck ! Baby Huey Ps rubbing alcohol on a rag is good to clean points with .

Could very well be that an adjustment is in order. Even tho the gap is small it is visible when you turn the engine over past the proper gap. If you cannot see it, then open it up a tad. I have set points with a match book cover. Not accurate but you know they are open!

So I am taking the next step and looking at possibly replacing the points. I have the manual printed and have followed your alls suggestions. Tonight I took off the cover to examine the actual points, they are grey, flat, but perhaps a bit pitted. Am considering replacing. However, I used a 17m socket and rotated the crankshaft counter clockwise and the points did not seem to move at ALL! This to me seems strange, and before I go replacing the points could it be that they simply need to be adjusted? I have not gotten a feeler gauge at this point, but that is the next obvious step. I want to make sure I do this right before I screw it up more.....I tried cleaning the points with a fine sandpaper, but the cover back on and POP POP POP....
