Re: [Honda-C70] Fuel running straight through carb and on ground.

Thanks for all the replies and recommendations. I have it up and running
like a champ. No problems what so ever with carb but had a tire fall apart
after about 10 miles. :-) I guess I will get to learn a lot about repairs
now. Reading all the emails is really wonderful information. Thanks again.

I agree with Bill . The Honda dealers $165 carb overhaul is actually
saying " We don`t want to work on your carb " . You could buy 3 new chinese
clone carbs from dratv.com that are better than the OEM Honda carb because
they are adjustable unlike the carb for 80/81 years that was as non
adjustable as Honda could make them to meet our government standards at the
time. You said you "soaked it over night" in what & whole or apart ? As
Bill said compressed air or a can of carb jet spray is needed to get the
crud out of the tiny passages & very tiny jets. Good Luck ! You can do it

$165 ????

Hell I will overhaul your carb for $165.

A carb clean is not really that hard. First we need to know what bike you
have.

The carbs are slightly different between model years.

Basically, you take pictures of the carb on the bike so you can check when
you

can not remember how it mounted.

You need to drain the fuel tank (or pinch the fuel lines to stop the flow of
fuel.)

Carbs with a removable fuel selector can just select off and remove the fuel
selector

from the carb.

Then you take if off the bike. You will need a good carb cleaned to soak the
carb in

Yamaha has a cleaner smelling carb cleaner. You can buy at an auto store a 1
gal

container for around $20 that you can store and reuse. Something like
Berryman.

Stinks but works great.

Then it is simple, take the carb apart. The slide is normally clean so you
can just unscrew

the top cap and remove the slide and leave it attached to the cable.

Then you lightly bottom the adjustment screws till they stop while you count
the

amount of turns it takes to bottom them. It will be like 1 1/2 for the ldle
mixture.

Write it down as you will get closer to correct when you put it back
together.

Then you take the carb apart. float bowl, float float needle valve. Some
carbs have a removable

float needle valve seat. You allready took the idle screw and idle mixture
screw turns to bottom, now

take them out of the carb. If they have a rubber "O" ring take it off and
save it.

You then take the removable jets out of the carb. Late carbs, the slow jet
is pressed in.

The carb body and the jets ect go into the cleaner. NO rubber, it will be
destroyed.

You rinse the carb and parts off with water.

I like to have a spray can of carb cleaner to spray in the passages as the
dip will not flow

into the small passages very well. You might have to do this a few times to
get it clean,

soak for an hour or so and clean and repeat.

As for new rubber parts, the best is from Honda. Same for hard parts. The
rebuild kits on

E bay are very poorly made, the hard parts can make the carb hard to dial in
or just flat

not work worth %%%###.

The finish is to reassemble the carb. If you have a plastic float it might
not be adjustable, the others

are adjustable so follow the shop manual To chaeck the float level hold the
carb vertical with the float

hanging down and slowly tilt the carb till the float just touches the spring
loaded plunger on the float valve

and measure at the mid point of the float bottom surface to the carb float
bowl flange.

Replace rubber parts as needed (you might get by reuseing the original.)

Install the idle screw and idle speed screw and lightly bottom them out and
then

back them off the amount you wrote down.

Reinstall the carb., do not over tightnen the carb to manifold nuts or
manifold to head nuts

as that will warp the flange and cause air leaks.

Start the bike and adjust the carb idle air mixture and idle speed.

Enjoy, ride offen and if you go to store it at least drain the carb and fill

the fuel tank full.

Hi, I am another nubee. Having trouble deciding what to do with carburetor.
Been reading posts and i soaked carburetor overnight without any changes,
Honda dealership said they can rebuild carburetor for $165.00 but will only
guarantee carburetor for one month because of ethanol in fuel plugs them up
almost immediately if you not using the additive to neutralize the ethanol's
stickiness and coating tendencies. Anybody have any advice about what to do,
how can i rebuild my own carburetor, i can't find any place in the groups
that tells you how to rebuild one. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Steven
