RE: [Honda-C70] after new steering head bearing install, no balance?

If it feels like it`s having a hard time finding center when going slow it
is usually the bearings are too tight. Hope that helps !

Subject: [Honda-C70] after new steering head bearing install, no balance?

Hi everybody,
So my steering head bearings were super wobbly - time to replace them.
It's not a small repair - for those of you who've done it, you know you
have to take the whole front end apart to get at the upper and lower
steering bearings, pound out the old races, and replace.
DrATV told me that these All Balls Racing cased bearings
<http://www.allballsracing.com/22-1002.html> were the best, so I
bought them and installed. Never done it before (like everything I do
to this bike :).
So I put everything back together, and the steering is no longer wobbly.
However, it feels now like I have WAY less balance than I did before.
When going at low speeds especially, I have much less leeway before the
front fork wants to pull to one side or another.
When traveling at faster speeds, things are real solid. But it feels
disconcertingly dangerous when going slower than, say, 15-20 mph. I
understand the laws of physics dictate this is normal, and I realize
that it's going to feel different after installing cased bearings after
having ball bearings, but still - it's really almost too much and I
don't like it.
What went wrong? The service manual told me to adjust the bearing
adjusting nut "until snug," then loosen 1/8. (I have no pin spanner, so
I just vice-gripped it. Not enough maybe?)
Or perhaps I didn't tighten the steering stem nut enough? Both
assemblies are addressed on this page.

Before I go about taking the whole damn thing apart again, I thought I'd
ask your learned opinions.
Thanks again as always,Tom
