2012 Chrysler 200 S Convertible Review & Test Drive

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 05:37 AM PDT

The all-new Chrysler 200 Convertible builds upon the outgoing Chrysler Sebring Convertible's long-standing affordable contribution to the convertible coupe segment. As a completely new design, the Chrysler 200 Convertible proves to be an impressively styled vehicle available in a soft-top and hardtop convertible coupe configuration.

My Pentastar 3.6-liter V6 powered 2012 Chrysler 200 S Convertible has rather appealing looks and enough room for 4 adult passengers. The V6 engine produces a healthy 283 horsepower at 6400 rpm and 260 ft. lbs. of torque at 4800 rpm. On paper, the horsepower rating is competitive within the 200 Convertible's range of competition. Unfortunately, the new 2012 200 S Convertible's performance staggers and is somewhat left behind by its competition due to its hefty weight. With almost 500 pounds added to the curb weight over the sedan, it diminishes any likelihood of the 200 S Convertible performing up to the expectations of a V6-powered coupe. In my judgment, the 200 Convertible, even with a 283 horsepower V6, has lackluster performance followed up with clunky handling attributes.

With a curb weight of 4,000 pounds (3,898 lbs. for the 200 Touring trim soft-top convertible model), it makes me wonder what type of extra rigidity and aluminum roof reinforcements where used in the new Chrysler 200 S Convertible. Proving to be relatively quiet for a convertible on the road and virtually rattle free, the Chrysler 200 S Convertible exhibits a rigid body structure. The suspension seems to be on the soft side with a bit of an unwanted float and bounce when cruising over bumpy roads. Over-all, the body remains manageable through turns provided you are not pushing the 200 S Convertible to the limit. The V6 engine seems to produce an adequate amount of power especially with the adept 6-speed automatic transmission finding the optimal gear without too much hunting.

The new 2012 Chrysler 200 Convertible, among the most affordable hard-top convertible vehicles currently available, appeals to a wide audience. For those who are able to get past the Chrysler 200 Convertible's shortcomings, it begs to offer the consumer an improved and much more matured vehicle when compared to the Sebring Convertible predecessor.

Interior space in the new Chrysler 200 Convertible is modest and provides all occupants with a solitary cabin when the top is up. The dashboard is virtually the same as found in the 200 Sedan. The power-folding hardtop, proving to fold smoothly, takes its time to fully retract or completely close at the touch and hold of a single button.

The seats in my new 2012 Chrysler 200 S Convertible proved to be comfy but seriously lacking lateral support. The front perforated cloth inserts and leather trimmed front seating surfaces add a value aesthetic to the interior while the commonplace Chrysler uConnect LCD touch-screen interface, for audio and GPS navigation controls, feels somewhat dated. The operation of the front seats for rear seat entry/exit can be a bit cumbersome where the release latch does not allow the seat to move forward without separately operating the power seat control.

The new 2012 Chrysler 200 Convertible is available in three different trim levels, a Touring trim with a standard 173 horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and power-folding cloth top, a Limited trim adding the efficient 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine and power-folding hard top, and the S trim adds dark exterior trim, perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel and a Boston Acoustics sound system.

Fuel economy is somewhat consistent across the board when comparing the Chrysler 200 Convertible's 4-cylinder engine against the beefy V6, with both getting around 19 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. It is definitely worth considering the Limited or S trim levels for the V6 power.

In the good old days of the Sebring Convertible being epitome of what you expect to get at your local rental car company when asking for a Convertible, the new Chrysler 200 Convertible attempts to shake off that old conception. With its midsized dimensions and new stylish looks, the new Chrysler 200 Convertible is now the best bargain you can find in the midsized Convertible segment. Not to mention, you get the choice of a powerful V6 and power-folding hardtop to boot.

When it comes to value, Chrysler has done an exceptional job in offering fresh new products appealing to the masses. For the Convertible segment, the all-new 2012 Chrysler 200 Convertible is an excellent value with a solid drivetrain. Aside from the Chrysler 200 Convertible's minor shortcoming with its diminished performance attributes, due to an unforeseen weight issue, it beckons to be the best bang for the buck. With a price of admission at $26,955 plus destination putting you in a new 2012 200 Touring 4-cylinder Convertible, Chrysler has positioned themselves at the top of the midsized convertible food chain. My loaded up 2012 Chrysler 200 S Convertible has an as-tested price of $35,510.

Chris Harris, Rally Co-Driver: Video

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 12:32 PM PDT

Chris Harris rides shotgun in a Lancia Delta S4

Chris Harris would be the first to admit he makes a lousy passenger. He also doesn't attend tire product launches, since his self-described job is reviewing cars, not components. Every rule has its exception, and when Harris was invited to the launch of the new Pirelli P7 Corsa Classic vintage rallying tire, he jumped at the chance.

Why would Harris attend an event where he's merely a passenger and not the driver? Why would he waste time on a tire launch that isn't even for contemporary sports cars? Two words sum it all up: hero worship.

To demonstrate how good the new P7 Corsa Classic is, Pirelli arranged ride-alongs with Markku Alén and Juha Kankkunen. Those names may not be familiar to those of us on this side of the pond, but Alén drove in WRC competition for Fiat, Lancia, Subaru and Toyota from 1973 to 1993. Only Sebastien Loeb has more stage wins in WRC, although Alén never earned a WRC championship.

Kankkunen, on the other hand, won the championship four times, driving for Toyota, Peugeot, Lancia, Ford, Subaru and Hyundai. In other words, both drivers have forgotten more about car control at speed than most of us have ever learned.

The cars that Harris would be chauffeured around in were special, too, including the legendary Lancia Stratos and Lancia Delta S4. The Stratos' short wheelbase and mid-engine, rear drive layout quickly earned the car respect among drivers, since it was blindingly fast and easy to rotate, but utterly unforgiving of mistakes. The Delta, which was a bit more balanced, packed as much as 800 horsepower in various trims, making all-wheel-drive a necessity.

Of the experience, Harris said it might just be the best day of his working life. We certainly wouldn't argue with that point.

2013 Chevrolet Volt Gets Better With Increased Range via Larger Battery

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 11:09 AM PDT

Even though the new Chevy Volt has received is fair share of criticism lately, it remains to be the most innovative and technologically advanced vehicle on the road today built by hard working Americans. As proof of a working concept, the Chevy Volt is getting better with the introduction of an increased electric range, a 3 mile increase, thanks to a larger battery. Additionally, the new 2013 Volt's EPA ratings have climbed from 94 MPGe to 98 MPGe receiving an over-all range increase to 380 miles. Charge times for the new battery are expected to slightly increase taking 10.5 hours with a 120V outlet charger and 4.25 hours with a 240V rapid charger.

We still believe in the Volt and expect it to be the way of the future as others could adopt such innovation without the unfair scrutiny of those who are not so favorable of the US government.

2013 Shelby GT500 Finally Pegs 200MPH: Video

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 10:43 AM PDT

We previously posted a closer look at the new 2013 Shelby GT500 where the engineers at SVT attempted to push the GT500 to 200 mph. In their enduring attempts on the hot desert, they fell short of 200 mph by only a few miles-per-hour. As a follow-up, Ford has released a video of the Shelby GT500 pegging the 200 mph mark on the Nardo test track in Italy.

It was always in the playing cards to actually hit 200 mph since the new 2013 Shelby GT500 is said to have the capability to reach such a speed. This means everything to the marketing team at Ford who now have a much easier task of touting their 662 horsepower pony car to finicky enthusiasts. Check out the exclusive video of the 200 mph GT500 run below.

2012 BMW 650i Convertible Review – ‘The Ultimate Tanning Machine’

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 07:32 AM PDT

Just in time for warmer spring and summer fun, BMW introduces its all-new, third generation 2012 650i convertible.  It comes packaged with sleek and sexy styling,  excellent twin turbo-charged V8 power, a high-tech 8-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters, a fully-independent suspension with 4-modes, large, 4-wheel ventilated steel disc brakes, all riding on 20X9 inch alloy wheels that are wrapped with high-performance tires.  Under the skin this latest 6-Series BMW convertible has it all to keep any automotive enthusiast happy when behind the wheel.

This is only part of the 650i convertible as the interior is also new and very sumptuous with the latest innovative infotainment and safety features to keep you and your passengers' safe.  The all-new third generation 650i convertible will be priced starting at $91,500.00.  My fully loaded test model stickered for $105,025.00.

The signature BMW dual kidney chrome grille, a black lower grille, a sweeping hood, aft-set passenger compartment, long wheelbase and muscular profile embody the hallmark proportions of a BMW convertible.  It combines these features with a classic multi-layered canvas soft-top roof with flying buttress design.  When the one-touch, automatic roof is lowered or raised in just 20 seconds you'll notice a wide chrome strip from the windshield pillars to around the belt line and finishing at the rear of the thick convertible top giving the car a more elegant look.  HID and LED front and rear lamp clusters, lighted pull-out door handles, deep lower side extensions, a lip spoiler and wide, rectangular chrome dual exhaust tips are just a sampling of the cutting-edge exterior features.

Once inside you'll be amazed at the power developed by the 4.4 liter, twin-turbocharged, all-aluminum V8 engine with high-precision direct injection that generates 400hp and 450lb.ft. of torque.  This unique 'reverse-flow' engine, whose turbochargers are positioned in the V-area between the cylinder banks, produces an instantaneous and sustained wave of power, making it an energetic delight for the enthusiast driver.

Mated to the all-new 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters enables you to keep in low gear up to redline, with sprints to 60mph from a standstill in less than 5-seconds.  The launch control feature is spectacular as you are firmly pinned to the seatback as you rocket out from a standstill. This high-performance powertrain returns a respectable 16mph/city and 24mpg/highway.

Your driving fun and enjoyment is further enhanced with the standard Driving Dynamics Control that gives you four settings to choose from depending on how you want your car to respond-COMFORT, NORMAL, SPORT AND SPORT + modes using the large rocker switch on the center console.  The fully independent suspension features a double wishbone front axle, active dampers, coil springs and stabilizer bar, while the multi-link rear axle features active dampers, coil springs and a stabilizer bar.  The chassis is geared to the requirements of drivers with sporting intentions but a comfortable ride over poorly paved roads is ensured in the comfort mode.  The all-new 650i is the first car in its class that can be equipped with Integral Active Steering.  This system combines the Active Steering system for the front axle with a new, steerable rear axle.  Precisely harmonized steering angle movements at both axles create a virtual lengthening or shortening of the vehicle's wheelbase, which fosters great high-speed stability and enhanced maneuverability in city traffic.

Quickly and safely slowing you down from speed are large 13.7 inch, vented front discs clamped with 4-piston calipers, while 13.6 inch vented discs clamped with dual-piston calipers are in the rear.  Precision and effectiveness is reinforced with Dynamic Stability Control, ABS, Traction Control, Cornering Brake Control, Dynamic Brake Control, and an automatic Brake Drying function with Brake Fade Compensation, all working together to give you more power and control in emergency situations or when braking on slick pavement.

The new 650i convertible rides on stunning, lightweight aluminum wheels, 20X8.5in. up front and 20X9in. in the rear.  These sporty wheels are wrapped with super-high-performance Dunlop, low profile tires-245/35R20 up front and 275/30R20in. rear tires for incredible grip and a smooth ride.

The comfortable and elegant interior is designed to be a 2+2 with the traditional BMW driver-oriented cockpit.  Its interior offers 14-way power adjustable, Nappa leather front bucket seats with variable side bolstering and heating/cooling functions.  High quality leather, wood and chrome are meticulously formed to produce an ambience defined by luxury, a sweeping style and Teutonic functionality.  The driver oriented cockpit layout features a central section of the instrument panel, containing the iDrive system's Central Display, the air vents and the controls for the Surround Sound AM/FM/CD/DVD/MP3/iPod/Sirius Satellite premium audio system and A/C, all angled slightly toward you.  The gearshift lever and switches for the electronic parking brake, roof operation and Driving Dynamics Control are located on a surface that opens out toward you and is set lower than the front passenger side of the center console.  Control and comfort come naturally.

Standard equipment includes a rearview camera, ambient lighting, Park Distance Control, navigation system, Bluetooth, all express up/down windows, power door locks, heated side mirrors, self-dimming rearview mirror, dynamic cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, thick pile carpeting with floor mats, dual map and vanity mirror lights.  Safety systems include driver/front passenger airbags, side-impact airbags, 3-point safety belts, push button start/stop, keyless entry, tire pressure monitoring system, rollover protection, and front/rear/side crush protection.

The all-new 2012 BMW 650i convertible is one of the best 2+2 luxury sport coupes on the market combining the best from BMW's long history of offering the Ultimate Driving Machine!

High Gear Concept Chosen For SEMA All-Female Build

Posted: 07 Jun 2012 06:30 AM PDT

The High Gear Mustang Concept, designed by Jennifer Seely

To show that women are as capable of designing and building cars as men, Ford teamed up with the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) to sponsor the inaugural SEMA Mustang Build Powered by Women. Three proposed designs were posted online, and fans got to vote for the concept they'd most like to see built.

In the end, a concept called High Gear, penned by Ford's Jennifer Seely, won top honors. Seely drew her styling inspiration from categories as diverse as jewelry, couture clothing and architecture, and says the theme carries an international influence as well.

Based on a 2013 Mustang GT (which was donated to the project by Ford), the SEMA build will get a satin black paint scheme, accented by rose-gold wheels, mirror caps and exterior trim. Inside, more rose-gold accents the cabin, which also sports leather trim and quilted black suede seats.

The Mustang will get engine, suspension, drivetrain and audio system upgrades as well, although details on these upgrades are lacking. High Gear will debut at this year's SEMA show, and it will be auctioned on eBay afterward to raise money for the SEMA Memorial Scholarship Fund.
