You need to add an additional relay to boost the voltage at the solenoid.

If you have a 6 volt bike, I have a relay kit available to fix the problem
you describe.

whats the diode do to the starting?
I just put in a new relay on a 81 but most of the time the relay doesnt
click over enough to start I have to hit it
does the diode help with that?
