RE: [Honda-C70] Re: exhaust system

Jeff : If by "get it locally " you mean the Honda cycle shop . Yes . Auto parts store or hardware store no . At the Honda shop we sometimes need to lie to the parts man & tell them we need a part for a current model not our "no longer in the parts book" 30 year old bikes. If the parts man says the new part is the solid copper ring , get it over the one time use "donut" crush gasket . You will never need to buy it again . Baby Huey

Subject: [Honda-C70] Re: exhaust system

Thanks everyone. The reason I am a little in the dark about this is that the exhaust systems was loose of the head when I bought the bike so I don't know what parts are missing - all there is the fange and one stud. I think I can solve the problem with the information you have provided and when the two circle pieces arrive from Dr ATV I will have a better idea how to goes together. Sounds like I might have to get a crush gasket. Do you think it is a part that I could get locally or is it specific to the C-70. Jeff

To add to the confusion some new pipes have a thick neck on the pipe that takes the place of the half circles . But what ever kind of pipe you have you still need a crush gasket or the permanent copper gasket in the groove in the head to keep the pipe from damaging the soft aluminum head from vibration . Also if you haven`t yet taken the pipe down from the head don`t be surprised that the head looks like a big chunk is missing by the exhaust port . Honda made all these head with a void in the casting. Many people panic the first time they see the head with that big chunk missing . I know I did . Good Luck ! Baby Huey

Some say I just need the two piece gasket so I ordered them from Dr ATV yesterday. You have given me different advice. I just got the bike and it runs pretty well. I am afraid to drive it much with the exhaust open as it is for fear of damaging a value or the piston. I guess this might be too simple of a problem to bring to the group's attention but since I have to order the parts online I want to make sure I am ordering the correct parts so I fix the problem (and the vibration rattle!). Jeff PS This is a 1981 Passport with I believe a stock exhaust system.

> Jeff : I hope you are able to get the broken stud out . When I had a broken exhaust stud ,it would not drill out . So I had to remove the head & beg a machine shop to mill out the broken piece . The machine shop forman said he would "try" under 1 condition ,that we both agreed that the head was junk & had no value" as is "so that if his work went wrong he was not at fault. It worked & I now have an over size american thread cap screw with a nut replacing the exhaust stud . There are 2 types of exhaust gaskets . First is a crush gasket that sits in a groove in the head around the exhaust port . Like its name it is crushed by the end of the exhaust pipe to form a seal against the aluminum head. You are supposed to replace it with a new 1 when ever you loosen the pipe ,& it is thin metal & rots out in the heat & exhaust. The other is a solid copper gasket that fits in the groove in the head in place of the crush gasket & is permanent forming a copper

It is supposed to be complete ready to bolt on . But like any ready to go you would need to check that every thing is tight & correct before bolting it on . I hope your luck is better than mine ,but my bike is still "alive " after head surgery. Baby Huey PS I did the head surgery before I knew about this group so it was cross my fingers & hope with no one to ask advice. To: Honda-C70@yahoogroups.com

I am wanting to know what parts (gaskets) belong between the head and the flange. Also, I imagine there are nuts for the studs that secure the fange. Would any one know the size of these nuts? I am wondering if, after tapping out the broken stud, I will be able to use a stock size stud (I believe I saw these offered from one of the online parts stores) and, again, what size the nuts would be. Also, does anyone have an opinion as to whether the Hayes c-50 c70 c90 book is worth the $36 dollar cost. Thanks, Jeff
