Note that the gasket (part 3) goes onto a 'shelf' in the exhaust port on the head. Then the flared end of the exhaust pipe muffler (part 6) is pressed tightly upon the gasket by the action of the loose flange on the exhaust pipe pressing on the pipe joint half collars (part 1) which hit the back of the flared end of the pipe. The nuts push the flange onto the collars, which push the flared end of the pipe onto the gasket, sealing the connection.
