Can A Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 Outrun An Arrow? Video

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 12:30 PM PDT

Many factors determine the speed of an arrow leaving a bow, including the weight of the arrow, the draw (and design) of the bow and wind conditions at the range. For the sake of argument, let's just say that the average speed of an arrow as it leaves a bow is 83 meters per second, which translates to around 186 miles per hour.

That's quite a bit faster than the top speed of a Hyundai Genesis Coupe, even the 3.8-liter version. Still, the arrow begins to loose speed almost as soon as it leaves the bow, thanks to wind resistance. Is it possible, then, for a car given a running start to out-run an arrow over a distance of about 100 meters?

We'd spoil the video if we gave away the answer, but ask yourself this: would Hyundai release the video if the Genesis Coupe couldn't cross the line faster than the arrow?

We're not sure the video proves anything, but at least it's a car stunt we hadn't seen before. We also don't recommend you try to duplicate this video at home, especially if you drive a convertible.

J.D. Power 2012 Initial Quality Study (IQS) Released: Lexus Tops Chart

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 11:23 AM PDT

Each year J.D. Power and Associates release an Initial Quality Study composed of a 228-question survey conducted by responses from U.S. consumers that purchased or leased a new vehicle. Based on 74,000 responses from consumers, the 2012 IQS survey reveals brand quality from the number of issues reported averaged from problems per 100 vehicles to give each nameplate a corresponding ranking.

This year, Lexus tops the list for the second year in a row where it was followed by Jaguar, Porsche, Cadillac, Honda, Acura, Infiniti, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Also finishing above the industry average were Mazda, GMC, Nissan, Ram and Chevrolet.

It was hard to rise and easy to fall this year as automakers scored the biggest improvement in quality since 2009 and sliced the average number of problems reported per 100 vehicles to 102 from 107 in 2011, Power said.

Automakers make quality an extremely important aspect of vehicles produced today. With an abundance of new electronics and devices finding their way into today's automobiles, they remain to be a major factor in studies such as J.D. Power's IQS. Within the study it was noted that a rising number of 'problems' were in fact issues where consumers had difficulty utilizing certain features instead of it being an actual 'broken' or 'flawed' item. The single biggest problem reported this year was voice-recognition devices that didn't work properly. Maybe this could be a breakthrough for Apple integrating Siri in select vehicles.

Video: Stock Scion FR-S Lays Down 173 Rear-Wheel-Horsepower

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 10:45 AM PDT

The new Scion FR-S, alongside of the new Subaru BRZ, is one of the most highly anticipated low-cost enthusiast oriented vehicles to hit the market. With its heritage and engineering aspects coming from both ends of the Japanese car culture spectrum (Subaru and Toyota), it is sure to be a hit among enthusiasts looking for one of the best platforms to build off of and modify. To prove that the Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ is one of the best foundations to start with in the tuner world, we have posted Inside Line's Dyno run of the FR-S below.

Surprisingly the new Scion FR-S is quite the efficient little rear-wheel-drive vehicle putting out a healthy 173 horsepower to the wheels. With a rating of 200 horsepower to the flywheel, the FR-S has a relatively small power loss through the drivetrain. In knowing this, tuners are already ahead of the game. We await wheel-horsepower numbers of the first few tuners who bolt-on that monster turbo kit to the new FR-S or BRZ. Exciting stuff!

2013 Continental GT Speed: Bentley Builds Their Fastest Production Car w/ 616HP

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 09:25 AM PDT

Bentley is more than willing to suffice for the request delivering the fastest land-yacht with two doors yet with the introduction of their new 2013 Continental GT Speed. The all-new 2013 Bentley Continental GT Speed does not appear to have many changes just by the looks alone but you would be mistaken.

What lies behind that large mesh grill is a refined 12-cylinder engine fitting to propel the mammoth-sized luxury sports coupe to exotic-car speeds while offering up lavish interior appointments. The new 2013 Continental GT Speed is Bentley's fastest production car ever with a 616 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter W12 engine.

The new Bentley Continental GT Speed, rolling on unique 21-inch wheels shod in 275/35R21 Pirelli PZero tires, is destined for a top speed of 205 mph and dash to 60 mph from a standstill in 4 seconds flat. To get to such a high speed, the Continental GT Speed permanently directs power to all four wheels through a close-ratio ZF 8-speed automatic transmission and benefits from lowered uprated suspension for better handling.

The 2013 Bentley Continental GT Speed will make its debut at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed. Orders for the new 2013 Continental GT Speed are currently being taken with the first cars delivered as early as October of this year.

2013 Bentley Continental GT Speed Press Release

BENTLEY LAUNCHES ITS FASTEST PRODUCTION MODEL EVER – THE NEW CONTINENTAL GT SPEED

- International debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2012
- 616hp, 590 lb-ft of torque (625PS, 800 Nm) and capable of 205mph (329km/h)
- Lowered, uprated suspension for a sportier stance and harder-edged, agile Bentley driving experience
- Signature Speed design cues and Mulliner Driving Specification cabin
- New close-ratio 8-speed automatic transmission

(Crewe, England. 20 June 2012). Bentley is introducing a new performance flagship, its fastest production model ever, the Continental GT Speed coupe. The new 205 mph (329km/h) GT Speed will appeal to driving enthusiasts who place a high value on outright performance, agile handling, distinctive design and sporting luxury. Orders for the new GT Speed are being taken now, with deliveries to commence in October 2012.

At the heart of the new Continental GT Speed is an uprated version of the unique Bentley 6-litre, 48-valve, four-cam, twin turbocharged W12 engine. For the new model, the legendary Bentley W12 develops 625 PS (616 bhp/460 kW) at 6000 rev/min and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque to deliver thunderous, supercar performance with effortless overtaking capability. The 0-60 mph sprint is dispatched in a mere 4.0 seconds (0-100 km/h in 4.2s) and on to a top speed of 205 mph (329 km/h).

The new Speed’s immense power is transmitted via a close-ratio, ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. This state-of-the-art transmission delivers quick yet imperceptible gear changes through intelligent adaptive control software to ensure the perfect combination of speed and refinement. The new gearbox also makes a significant contribution to an overall twelve per cent improvement in fuel economy and CO2 emissions.

Channelling the extreme performance of the GT Speed is a unique chassis tune that includes uprated steering and suspension systems and a lowered ride height. The enhanced chassis is complemented by unique 21-inch Speed wheels, available in two lustrous finishes, and fitted with 275 35 R21 Pirelli PZero ultra-high performance tyres. The result is a sportier and more engaging Bentley driving experience with tauter handling and improved agility.

Commenting on the new GT Speed, Wolfgang Dürheimer, Bentley’s Chairman and Chief Executive says:

“For nearly a decade, the Bentley Continental GT has defined high luxury, high performance grand touring and the unique W-12 engine has been so successful that Bentley is now the world’s largest producer of 12-cylinder engines. The new GT Speed, with its harder-edged, sportier character, reaffirms this pinnacle positioning and continues to broaden the worldwide appeal of the Continental coupe.”

The muscular, elegantly sculpted coachwork of the Continental coupe is subtly enhanced with design touches which reinforce the sporting character of the new model. Most notable are the dark-tinted matrix front grille and lower air intakes and the ‘rifled’ finish to the exhaust tailpipes.

The new GT Speed delivers supreme levels of performance with no compromise in comfort, refinement, craftsmanship and quality. Using only the finest natural materials, the hand-crafted cabin of the GT Speed features the Mulliner Driving Specification as standard as well as a number of signature Speed design cues that combine contemporary luxury with a distinctly sporting character.

Standard fitment on all Continental models, the permanent all-wheel drive system, employing a central Torsen differential, harnesses the prodigious power and torque of the new GT Speed and ensures huge levels of grip and stability whatever the road or weather conditions.

Ahead of deliveries this autumn, the GT Speed makes its international debut at the prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed from 29th June until 1st July. Modern-day Bentley Boys Juha Kankunnen, Guy Smith and Derek Bell will pilot a pre-production GT Speed up the Goodwood Hill twice a day.

‘Imported From Gotham City’ – Chrysler Sponsors ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ with 300S Ad Spot

Posted: 20 Jun 2012 07:25 AM PDT

Okay sure Gotham and the real city of Detroit have some things in common. After all, Detroit is Gotham City right? With the new 'Dark Knight Rises' movie to hit the big screen next month, Chrysler jumps into the mix with a new ad and slogan, 'Imported from Gotham'. Partnering with Warner Bros. Pictures, Chrysler released a 30-second ad spot titled "imported from Gotham City" in place of the traditional "Imported from Detroit" slogan.

The new ad spot features the Chrysler 300S, revealing a dark customized exterior and modifications fitting for Gotham City (you can’t get the flames on the real car). Of course we don't think Batman would choose a new Chrysler 300S as his choice of transportation. After-all, we caught Catwoman behind the wheel of a new Lamborghini Aventador in the latest movie trailer (posted below).

The commercial is set to air this evening on the NBC network. Be sure to check out 'Dark Knight Rises' opening in theaters on July 20th.

IS BMW Back To Planning A New M1?

BMW's supercar, the M1, only saw production from 1979 until 1981. Less than 500 were ever built, making surviving examples rare and expensive. Many were raced, which decreases your odds of finding a street car survivor even further.

In 2008, BMW showed its M1 Homage Concept (pictured above) to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the M1. Rumors that the car would see production turned out to be false, but the upcoming i8 performance hybrid was said to be heavily influenced by the M1 Homage Concept.

Now comes word from Automibilwoche (via Left Lane News) that a new M1 isn't entirely off the table. BMW, it seems, wants a halo sports car to go head to head with the Audi R8, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and the Porsche 911 Turbo, and a new M1 could do wonders for the company's image.

Word is that the car will use a unique chassis, likely constructed from aluminum instead of carbon fiber to reduce costs. Expect power to come from a twin-turbo V-8, with output likely to be in the range of 650 horsepower. Since light weight is the key to performance, BMW is said to be shooting for a curb weight of 2,800 pounds, which is ambitious for just about anything with a V-8 under the hood.

We'd love to see a new M1, but question whether or not the global economy can sustain yet another supercar. We're sure BMW is asking the same questions, which means that the accountants may wind up overruling the engineers.
