Bill, you forgot to put down the real formula:
A leaky brass float with fuel residue + torch = explosion.
A brass float is made out of very thin material and it should be very easy to solder it with a solder gun. If you clean the old solder first with a scruffing pad and re-flux it, you should be able to resolder the seam easily. Using a torch makes it hard to control the amount of solder dispense on the joint. Too much solder makes the float heavyer.

There must be some way you can "Braze" it shut again. It was originally.
Wonder how the floats wear out?
But yeah, use a torch and try not to add too much material. If you have a postal scale weigh it before and after.
