RE: [Honda-C70] Re: Back Rest for 81

E30 TOUR model or E260 micro might fit a cub better. even then, it's pretty big.

but yeah the E45 is enormous.

that case looks rather large for the C70. would the E36 be a better fit? and what mounts did you get for it?

[Honda-C70] Re: Installing new carb

Thanks a ton. I'll do the basic carb "tune" before I install a new one. My problem is that when the engine is cold I have trouble keeping it from stalling without giving it gas until it's warmed up (with choke on of course). I'll try this and see how it goes.

MotorTrend Compares The Mercedes C250 And BMW 328i: Video

Posted: 30 May 2012 12:30 PM PDT

If you're shopping for a German luxury sport sedan on a relatively tight budget, and you prefer new cars to used, chances are very good that you'll be cross-shopping the BMW 328i against the Mercedes-Benz C250. Both are comparable in size and price, and both now derive power from turbocharged four cylinder engines.

The BMW gets a 2.0-liter four, rated at 240 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque. This helps the car sprint from 0-60 mph in just 5.6 seconds, yet it still manages to return 36 mpg on the highway. The Mercedes-Benz, on the other hand, makes due with a 1.8-liter four, good for 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque. That's still enough to propel it from 0-60 mph in 6.9 seconds, while returning up to 31 mpg on the highway.

While these numbers serve as reference points, the real value of a sport sedan comes from feel. How it communicates to the driver in a corner is, to some degree, even more important than how fast it accelerates off a stop light. Factor in the luxury aspect, and driver comfort becomes equally important.

There's a clear winner in this comparison, and there's really no surprise which car comes out on top. It's worth pointing out that the BMW 328i is all new, while the Mercedes-Benz was last updated in 2007. A new C-Class model is under development, so a comparison between the new 3 Series and the new C-Class may be a closer dogfight.

BMW To Offer Manual Transmission On New M6

Posted: 30 May 2012 07:12 AM PDT

Some automotive purists cannot be convinced of the idea that dual-clutch transmissions or other variations of automated manual gearboxes are better than the traditional three-pedal manual stick-shift. BMW happens to be one of the rare performance and luxury vehicle manufacturers (aham… "driving machine makers") in American that still understands this. BMW understands it so well that they offer a manual gearbox for most of their car lineup, and will reportedly do the same with the new 2013 and 2014 BMW M6.

The new 2013 BMW M5 already offers a 6-speed manual gearbox and the new M6 will follow suit possibly for the 2013 and 2014 model years. Enthusiasts in American will rejoice as BMW keeps hope alive with the effort to save the manuals. Contrary to the matter, BMW is allegedly attempting to convince its executives to lobby for a broader acceptance for automatics. Until that lobbing becomes successful, give me the manual option please!

Second Earthquake Shutters Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini

Posted: 30 May 2012 06:33 AM PDT

Ferrari's 458 Italia Spider. Image: Ferrari

A second earthquake hit Italy's Modena province on Tuesday morning, killing at least 15 people, destroying buildings and damaging infrastructure. The quake, which measured 5.8 in magnitude, struck at 9:00 a.m. local time and was followed by aftershocks as strong as 5.6.

While automakers Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini escaped factory damage in the quake, all three halted operations so that employees could join their families. As Autoweek reports, all three automakers are expected to resume production today.

Motorcycle manufacturer Ducati, also based in the region, was closed following Tuesday's quake as well. It's expected that the Volkswagen Group's latest acquisition will resume production today, too.

The second quake was centered near the towns of Cavezzo, Medolla and Mirandola, but was felt as far away as Tuscany and Umbria. While Italy suffers some 2,000 earthquakes annually, temblors of this magnitude in northern Italy are a rare occurrence.

RE: [Honda-C70] Installing new carb

My 81 clone carb was near perfect . But I had completely disassembled both carbs to compare & make sure everything was right [2 pop flats so no mixed parts ] & tightened correctly. I left the petcock on the fuel lines & gas in the tank & put it on the new carb . Didn`t want to crack old rubber fuel lines. I swapped the petcocks later when I was low on reserve. There are a few ways to go wrong swapping the slides on the cable . Like not getting the cable end in the pocket in the under side of the slide or not getting the slot in the slide lined up with the nub in the body of the carb or dropping the slide in back wards . All will leave the carb stick at 1/2 wide open.

All in all it was easier than changing points for me . My points Hate me , they always go wrong for me. Don`t ask me how I know the wrong ways to install a carb slide , but I didn`t read them . Wish I had . Baby Huey`s 2 cents ps Mike G posted a very detailed post on carb swapping a while back try to find it . Worth the read . To: Honda-C70@yahoogroups.com

I have a 1980 Honda Passport C70 that needs some carburetor work done. I have a new carb from dratv.com that I was thinking of just installing instead of trying to fix the original one. Will I need to "tune" (besides adjusting the idle screw) the new one or should it just work out of the box?

RE: [Honda-C70] Zeroing in on Carb adjustment....

You seem to be calling the needle a slide & vice versa . The non adjustable original needle & after market needle with adjustment grooves have different tapper on their length & point & should only be used with the slide they came with in the carb body they came in so they fit in the hole in the carb floor correctly . The slide also has different cutaways. If what you are doing hasn`t fixed a problem look in other areas. Carbs get blamed for lots of other problems. I cleaned my carb twice when the spark plug cap was going dead. Baby Huey`s 2 cents

I used the original slide, which was longer, and it got better. Rode last night and bogged down again. Thinking of using the adjustable slide and making it longer than the original. Would the bogging down be caused by too much gas at the change from small jet to main jet? Seems that it is happening between 1/4 throttle and 1/2. Thanks

If I remember you put on an after market carb. If so the slide needle should be in the middle groove for most bikes that have not been modified ,air cleaner, exhaust, big bore kit, ect. By moving the "C" clip on the slide needle to a groove further from the pointed end you would get a leaner mixture [longer needle] in the mid range. And your main jet would get into full use later , [cork pulled from a bottle ] effect . A flat spot on high speed, bogging or stuttering , can point to the points rubbing block has worn down & points need to have the air gap adjusted so that the coil has enough time to recharge to fire the plug at high speed . A word of advice on points " don`t take the wire to the points loose if you can avoid it . Any change from the EXACT order of wire, washer, nut ,spring ,will ground the points to the backing plate ." I get it wrong every time I take the nut loose . There are no timeing marks to go by just eye the widest gap & measure with the correct feeler gauge. Read the manual first . Good Luck ! Baby Huey PS If your bike is an 82/83 it has CDI instead of points.

Ok, with all your help I have gotten closer. Have adjusted idle and air screw so that all in all bike running really well. However, at times when I pull back on the throttle the bike will flatten out and bog down. I am thinking the Needle jet is too short? Also have to install the gasket next to the insulator as I was told there could be an air leak? Thoughts? Suggestions? Thank you

[Honda-C70] Back Rest for 81

Has anyone installed or have a solution for a good looking back rest. I have done the milk crate before but now i'd like something a little classier. I was thinking of finding a motorcycle back rest and having it welded on. But maybe a nice bag that i could permanently mount on the back would be better with some padding.

thoughts anyone?

thank you

dave

RE: [Honda-C70] High Mileage

As someone who restores a lot of bikes, i have some things to say on this.

unless it was stored somewhere heated, the barn find bikes usually have the substantial rubber part degradation across all parts. tires, o-rings, gaskets, carb intakes, all rubber hoses, will need to be replaced. this is a lot of work.

the daily runner will usually have better condition rubber parts, as they're getting used more often, and stay squishy and nice. On the other hand, they will also have more wear and tear from actual use. they also often have some abuse from having to get to work every day, letting maintenance slip a little, running it a little longer than you should with the issue.

i would take either, but the full-on barn bikes tend to be the most work, but end up being the nicest when they're done because all the paint is pristine or whatever.

the daily driver is only ever going to be a daily driver again, but with less work.
